Collin County Historical Society & Museum

The museum is housed in a historic post office from 1911 building. It is a great place to find historical artifacts, photographs, documents, diaries, manuscripts, maps, archival newspapers and land records. The Collin County Historical Museum makes learning a fun experience and provides valuable research information for genealogists, historians, writers, teachers and students. The Collin County Historical Museum invites you to our McKinney Past and Present exhibit. This exhibit allows visitors to step back in time and experience what life was like in the early days of McKinney. Historic photographs, artifacts and plans of historic buildings help tell the stories of people, places and events that helped shape McKinney. The museum is open to the public every week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am. until p.m. Special tours can be arranged by contacting the museum from Monday to Wednesday. There is parking for the museum in front of the museum. A new 3-story parking garage is available directly across the street, accessible from Chestnut Street.

The Collin County Historical Museum invites you to our McKinney exhibit past and present. This exhibit allows visitors to step back in time and experience what life was like in the early days of McKinney. Historic photographs, artifacts and plans of historic buildings help tell the stories of people, places and events that helped shape McKinney. Visitors to the exhibition scan QR codes associated with videos on an iPad. Through these videos, they will hear stories of early McKinney through historical vignettes from Collin County historians. They can also experience McKinney today with 360-degree photos and drone video. The exciting news of the exhibition is the use of augmented reality. The iPad has an app called HP Reveal that enables this feature. After launching the app, you point the iPad’s camera at the image. HP Reveal detects the target and initiates an overlay. Don’t forget to check out this place in McKinney too.

The historical images in the exhibit are related to views of the same scenes as they are today, or views of a similar business now located in McKinney. Augmented reality (AR) allows visitors to compare themselves to McKinney then and now. Collin County is named for Collin McKinney, an early Texas settler and politician who helped start the Texas Revolution in 1835, which resulted in the secession of Texas from Mexico and the formation of the Republic of Texas. 2016 is McKinney’s 250th anniversary, so the museum currently has many exhibits that illuminate the man’s life and work. The exhibit includes McKinney’s signed documents, a large scale model of his home, Republic of Texas currency and a collection of photos from McKinney’s senior year.
